BJJ Black Belt and MMA Fighter Andy Wang on Carson's Corner!
05.07.09
Joining us today on Carson's Corner is noted fighter Andy Wang, fresh off a big win and getting ready for perhaps the most important fight of his career to date. Bob sat down with Andy and learned what he's been up to since his days as a contestant on season five of The Ultimate Fighter.

Tune in to hear Andy Wang revisit his stint on the show and some of the issues which arose from it: refusing to take fights to the ground, being kicked off BJ Penn's team, and his emotional breakdown after being defeated. Andy also very candidly discusses the way fans reacted to his brawling style, including his thoughts on the phrase "Stand and Wang" being used to describe groundfighters who try to strike instead of using their submission skills.

There's more to Andy than his appearance on TUF, though, and he looks to move forward and continue his winning ways with an upcoming battle against skilled thaiboxer Kit Cope in the "WarGods" promotion. Will Andy promise to try and take Kit to the ground? Click the link below to find out!

After the interview, Bob analyzes the latest hijinks from around the world of MMA and combat sports, including Don Frye's latest victory, Jose Canseco fighting the Techno Goliath Hong-Man Choi and a shoutout to fans from the UK. Don't miss it!

UFC IS FINALLY IN PHILLY!!
04.30.09
The UFC is coming to Philadelphia for the first time on Saturday, August 8th, and its bringing the big guns for UFC 101, as BJ Penn defends his UFC lightweight crown for the second time against number one contender Kenny Florian, and UFC middleweight boss Anderson Silva jumps back to the 205-pound weight class to take on former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin.

Tickets for UFC 101, which will take place at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center, will go on sale shortly. Stay tuned for further details.

The pride of Hilo, Hawaii, UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn (13-5-1) is on practically everyone's short list of best fighters in the world pound for pound, and on August 8th, he will be returning to the division he is the undisputed king of. Unbeaten at 155 pounds since 2002, Penn has taken out Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson, and Sean Sherk in successive lightweight fights, and after suffering a setback in his challenge for Georges St-Pierre's welterweight crown in January, Penn is eager to get back to his optimum weight to continue his reign of terror.

In just six years as a pro, Kenny "KenFlo" Florian (13-3) has done nearly everything in the sport of mixed martial arts, as he's fought in the middleweight, welterweight, and lightweight divisions, earned a spot in the finals on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, and beat some of the best fighters in the world in the process. The only thing missing for the 32-year old from Boston is a world championship, and after winning six in a row (including victories over Joe Lauzon, Joe Stevenson, and Roger Huerta), Florian is peaking at the right time for his second shot at the belt.

Currently sporting the longest consecutive win streak in UFC history at nine, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva (24-4) has also tied the organization record for most consecutive successful title defenses at five, beating the likes of Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Patrick Cote, and Thales Leites along the way. But the 34-year old native of Curitiba, Brazil is not satisfied yet, so he is tackling the light heavyweight division once again on August 8th, and if his first 205-pound bout - a 61 second knockout of James Irvin last July - is any indication, the big boys had better watch out for this lethal "Spider".

The winner of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter and a man credited by many as one of the reasons for the explosion of MMA in the United States following that TUF finale bout in 2005, Forrest Griffin (16-5) isn't a fighter who will take credit for such achievements - he just wants to fight, and with UFC wins over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua under his belt, the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion has more than proved himself in the Octagon. On August 8th, the 30-year old Griffin looks to fight his way back into the title picture after his loss to Rashad Evans last December, and there's no better way for him to do that than by handing Anderson Silva his first UFC loss.

Rest In Peace Charles Lewis
03.11.09
The MMA community suffered another huge loss today, as Charles Lewis, a.k.a. "Mask" of the TapouT crew, was killed in a car crash in Newport Beach, California. Attend almost any fight show out on the West Coast and you'd run into the garishly-dressed TapouT crew, shaking hands, posing for pics and repping their popular clothing brand. I only knew Charles in that capacity, but he was friendly as hell and treated everyone like a long-lost brother (at the last EliteXC in Florida, he saw me and affectionately pressed his forehead to mine). When we lose a fighter, we think of the battles they've given us in the cage or ring, and the battles they'll no longer fight. Losing Charles means we've lost one of the sport's biggest supporters - a man who sponsored tons of fighters and helped ingrain MMA into the public's consciousness. Rest in peace, Mask. You will be missed.

MMA in DE
03.06.09
There was a scheduled meeting at the offices of the Dept, of Regulations this past Monday, March 2nd at their offices in Dover,Delaware.Due to the snowstorm that hit the East Coast and dropped almost a Foot of snow in Delaware the State offices were closed.

Because the State offices were closed the meeting was canceled. The Meeting was to discuss the latest MMA Regulations that were publicly published in February 2009, and after this past meeting (barring any raised questions, though after 2 meetings all pertinent questions have already been raised.) the published regulations were to come into effect April 2009. The Canceled meeting now means that the whole process has to be revisited, because it is a State process it has to be reintroduced into the registrar and publicly published again and after a month a NEW public meeting will be announced.

I'm sure I speak to those that have been involved in the DE MMA scene that we will NOT tolerate the fact that because of the snow the whole process has to be redone.

I urge all of you, those who believe in the sport to call and email the Dept of regulations and ask for them NOT to redo the entire process that has already been done twice but to just reschedule the meeting that was supposed to happen this past Monday. Dept. of Regulations Contact:

James Collins can be reached at James.L.Collins@state.de.us
